The Edible Art Gallery – Call for Submissions

As you may already be aware, every year in Dublin (and more recently in other Irish cities too) there is an annual event called ‘Culture Night’. Art galleries, museums and cultural venues throw open their doors from 5pm – 10pm, stage special events and the city provides complimentary buses and the best part is that everything is free!

In 2010, we were approached by Denise Donnelly of The Bad Art Gallery to bring Dr Sketchy alternative life drawing sessions into her gallery. After the success of the night, the following year the gallery had moved to a smaller location and became The Doorway Gallery but Denise wanted us back again, so we took over part of South Frederick Street with a Cabaret marquee, life drawing, performance and live music. In 2013, we took up the entire street with Japanese themed Dr Sketchy sessions, plus taiko drummers and martial arts demonstrations.

We’ve gotten wonderful feedback from the media, from bloggers and from the management of The Temple Bar Cultural Trust who programme Culture Night and in 2013 we plan on once again being the talk of Culture Night with our new concept.

For one night only on Culture Night 2013, we proudly present ‘The Edible Art Gallery’ at The Doorway Gallery in association with Dr Sketchy’s Dublin and we’re asking for submissions – details below!

Open Call for Submissions

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

― Virginia Woolf

If the Mona Lisa was a food, what would it taste like? If you could lick a Warhol, would it be banana flavoured?

Food – sustenance, life-giving, essential and now – Art!

When people think of art, they usually consider it to be a painting or sculpture, something tangible and lasting, to view at a distance – rarely something delicious to be consumed overnight!! For one night only as part of ‘Culture Night’ on 20th September 2013, we proudly present ‘The Edible Art Gallery’ at The Doorway Gallery in association with Dr Sketchy’s Dublin!

Nibble on a sculpture, taste a painting, create your own cupcake artwork installations then gobble them down! We are curating a truly unique exhibition of edible art from artists, bakers, confectioners and food artisans using a wide variety of ingredients and techniques.

We are looking for one off unique pieces that will not be eaten on the night as well as work e.g, cupcakes, that can be consumed by visitors to the gallery on the night.

Details:

– Submissions close on 12th July 2013 19th July 2013 and we will review all submissions for inclusion in ‘The Edible Art Gallery’ for Culture Night 2013 on 20th September 2013

– Submissions will only be accepted by email to edibleart@drsketchysdublin.com

– Please send photos of your previous work along with ideas of food based work for ‘The Edible Art Gallery’

– Final pieces should be made from any edible ingredients

There is a huge opportunity for exposure for successful artists and bakers due to the high footfall on Culture Night. In 2012 our performers were featured in official Culture Night photoshoots, RTE filmed live from the street on the night and our performers also had featured slots on Dublin City Tv produced by NearTV.

The Edible Art Gallery is inspired by the incredible work of edible art curator Miss Cakehead – Check out her page for inspiration!
